Felicity A. Nussbaum suggests that we need to formulate new critical framings about the widened eighteenth century as well as a long one. In what ways can we widen the breadth, scale, and scope of eighteenth-century studies from a global and planetary perspective? How might we come up with ways to think about the interconnectivity among ideas, cultures, and texts that “move” beyond the boundaries of the metrapole and the margin, near and distant?

The organizing committee of the 2024 ELLAK International Conference invites submissions for a special session on the “global eighteenth century.” The conference will be held at Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, on December 12-14, 2024, under the theme of “Rethinking the Global English Studies.” We welcome proposals that attend to any aspects of eighteenth-century global networks, including, but not limited to:

  • Cultural-crossing among subjects, objects, and bodies
  • Textual migration, including book trade, translations, and cultural adaptations
  • Travel writing, cultural transfers, and global mapping
  • Racial (dis)configuration from a transnational perspective
  • Ecocriticism and the Anthropocene
  • Empire and colonial networks
  • Teaching eighteenth-century studies in non-English speaking worlds, especially Asia

Proposals should be submitted by February 2, 2024, to janelim@snu.ac.kr

An individual paper proposal should include:

  • Title of the paper;
  • An abstract of the paper (up to 200 words);
  • Following information on the speaker: full name, title, affiliation, email address, and brief bio (up to 100 words).

A limited number of travel awards (covering the registration fee and hotel expenses) are available for international participants in special sessions.
