ReFocus: The Films of Rituparno Ghosh

Rituparno Ghosh (1963-2013) remains a towering figure in Indian cinema, celebrated for his profound exploration of human relationships, engagement with complex societal issues, and his distinctive artistic sensibilities. While he is acclaimed for his directorial venture Hirer Angti (1992), along with other feature films, such as Unishe April (1994) and Chokher Bali (2003), he is widely known for his trilogy Chitrangada: The Crowning Wish (2012), Memories in March (2010), and Arekti Premer Golpo (Just Another Love Story, 2010) - all of which explores the human emotions amidst the prevalent societal norms.  

This edited volume endeavours to delve comprehensively into the multifaceted dimensions of Ghosh's cinematic repertoire, aiming to illuminate underexplored themes and trace his personal evolution as an artist. By inviting scholarly contributions across various disciplines, this volume seeks to offer fresh insights into Ghosh's cinematic legacy and its enduring relevance in contemporary discourse. One focal point of inquiry in this volume revolves around tracing the evolution of Rituparno Ghosh as an auteur. Contributors are encouraged to analyse Ghosh's trajectory as a filmmaker, spanning from his early works to his later masterpieces. By examining shifts in his stylistic choices, thematic concerns, and narrative techniques, scholars can elucidate the nuanced progression of Ghosh's artistic vision and its impact on Indian cinema. Another significant theme for exploration pertains to queer representation and sexuality in Ghosh's films. Ghosh, an openly gay filmmaker, has been lauded for his sensitive portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters and themes.

This edited volume seeks to offer a comprehensive exploration of Rituparno Ghosh's cinematic legacy, encompassing a diverse array of themes and methodologies. By inviting scholarly contributions from various disciplines, this volume aims to shed new light on Ghosh's profound engagement with human experience, societal dynamics, and artistic expression. Through interdisciplinary dialogue and critical inquiry, this volume endeavours to deepen our understanding of Ghosh's enduring significance as a visionary filmmaker and cultural icon in Indian cinema.

Submission Guidelines:

•           Abstracts should be submitted, along with a brief bio and 4-5 keywords by July 20, 2024, and should not exceed 300-350 words.

•           Full papers should be between 6,000 to 8,000 words (including references and should be in Chicago endnote style) and should adhere to academic standards and conventions.

•           All submissions must be original and not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Submission Process:

The Films of Rituparno Ghosh will be one among the series of scholarly editions for the Edinburgh University Press series of ReFocus volumes dedicated to international directors. The ReFocus series is edited by Robert Singer, Gary D. Rhodes, and Stefanie Van de Peer.
