North West Gender Conference 2015
University of Manchester, Manchester Meeting Place, 10th April 2015
Key Note: Professor Erica Burman

This inter-disciplinary conference is run 'by PGR's, for PGR's' and will provide a unique opportunity for Postgraduate students to talk about the influence of gender in their research. This event is for all Postgraduate students with the aim to provide a safe, comfortable and open environment to discuss 'research-in-progress' and to give and receive feedback and support from peers. Despite the theme of the event being gender-orientated, this conference is intended to offer the opportunity for any discipline and research student to discuss the impact of gender within their research, not only those whose work specifically focuses on gender.

Some suggested themes include:

• Methods, Methodology and Personal Reflections
• Feminism & Queer Theory
• Techno- feminism
• Gender and Popular Culture
• Gender, Sexuality and Subjectivity
• Gender, Politics and Discrimination
• Gender, History and Society
• Gender, Crime and Law
• Gender, Communication and Media
• Gender and Health
• Masculinities
• Gender, Sex Work and Modern Slavery
• 'Girls', 'Boys' and Youth Culture

The themes suggested here are deliberately broad and all encompassing, as they are intended to appeal to many disciplines. Papers that do not fit within these suggested themes, but fit under the broad 'gender' umbrella are also welcome. This event will be an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their 'research-in-progress', to present their work at a 'PGR friendly' conference, to hear potentially invaluable feedback and to network with like-minded peers.

For the first time this year we are also accepting submissions from groups, activists, practitioners and postgraduates for a SOAPBOX SESSION, in which speakers have a maximum of 5 minutes to present their idea. This is a relatively informal session, and debate is encouraged.

Traditional presentations are expected to be no longer than 20 minutes, with the opportunity for 10 minutes of questioning. Abstracts of 250 words are now welcome and the final date for submission will be 30th January 2015. Please include your name, institution, presentation style (traditional or soapbox session) and paper title on the abstracts. Submissions can also be made by groups of three or four people who wish to present as a panel on a particular theme – please clearly indicate on your abstract if it is to form part of panel session, including the names of co-panellists.

To submit an abstract and for any queries, please contact nwgc@outlook.com

Registration details will follow in the near future. We look forward to seeing you at the conference!
