Poetry of the Last Two Decades

Following weeks of intensive deliberations and the decision of the IRCALC board to expand the scope and readership of the journal on new Nigerian poetry, the editorial board has approved three broad themes in the upcoming edition of the New Nigerian Poetry journal project.

The project will enjoy the initial sponsorship of Progeny International even as more participants are welcome to join the efforts to sustain the emerging virile national literatures of Africa.

Nigeria, which has taken this leading instance, has witnessed the rise of a fervent poetic spirit and a near prolificacy of urgent voices of her constituent ethnicities giving rise to the emergence of new poetry of social and environmental awareness, political consciousness, cultural linguistic experimentations and rich translations from her oral literary repertoire.

Three broad themes will include subdivisions which are perceived trends in modern Nigerian poetic culture:

a) Critical Perspectives on Poetry of the last Two decades 1984-2004

b) Feature Poets: Enekwe, Ce, Ushie, Onwudinjo in the turbulent 80s (E-copies of selected poems available on request.)

c) Poetry Reviews to include Interviews and other scholarly interactions on the subject of Nigerian poetry.

Papers should be 20 pages in double-spaced typing and most recent MLA documentation style.

All poetry in indigenous languages may be submitted in accompaniment with their English translations.

To this aim and purpose, we would like to entertain submissions until April 2005 and, for fastest delivery, would encourage electronic mailing by attachment on popular Microsoft(TM) Word or Adobe(TM) Reader programs.

Submissions will be assessed on relevance, depth of scholarship, freshness of insight and expansion of literary frontiers. Moreover, the goal of imaginative approach to Africa's development issues is of paramount concern to the board of editors.
