"Psychoanalysis and Media" (SCMS, Seattle, March 19-24, 2014) Deadline August 15

updated:
Wednesday, July 31, 2013 - 9:01pm
SCMS

This panel invites proposals for papers that work towards complicating and exploring the intersections and problematics of psychoanalysis and media studies. Psychoanalysis has been crucial in the evolution of critical theory, and we contend that it remains a vital influence on contemporary discourse. We seek papers that address the ways in which psychoanalysis is a productive interlocutor, methodology, and object of study in the field of media studies. Papers could consider the tensions between the clinical practice of analysis and the use of psychoanalysis theoretically to discuss social and political questions. Additionally, papers might discuss questions of the psychic lives of media, affect, sexuality, race, and/or gender.

CFP for themed issue of Critical Studies in Television journal on Gender and Television Comedy

updated:
Wednesday, July 31, 2013 - 3:05pm
James Leggott (Northumbria University, UK)

This is a call for proposals for a special issue of the Critical Studies in Television journal entitled "Acting Up: Gender and Television Comedy" (planned publication date 2015). This issue is inspired by the range of work being done by established and emerging academics on television comedy – across formats such as sitcom, sketch shows and stand-up. Work by feminist academics, such as Patricia Mellencamp, Frances Gray and Kathleen Rowe, has established gender as key to understanding the politics of television comedy in the 1990s. In the last two decades work on sexuality, masculinity, celebrity and reception have built upon those foundations, establishing comedy as a complex and contradictory field of academic debate.

At times I feel your voice is reaching me from far away, while I am prisoner of a gaudy and unlivable present, where all forms of human society have reached an extreme of their cycle and there is no imagining what new forms they may assume. And I hear, from your voice, the invisible reasons which make cities live, through which perhaps, once dead, they will come to life again.
Invisible Cities, Italo Calvino

Social Water: an Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Workshop

25th October 2013, University of York

Call for Papers

Water sustains life, but how might it also be said to sustain communities? Social and cultural engagements with water have become a rapidly expanding research area, a development which has challenged and complicated the previously dominant technical–managerial view of water as a 'natural resource'. There is a growing realisation that ecologically-responsible interactions with water can only come about through an understanding of how people experience, use and 'think with' water as a particular type of substance that lies somewhere between nature and culture.
