African American periodicals such as the Indianapolis _Freeman_, _Colored American_, _Crisis_, and _The Black Panther_ emphasize the impact of images, as well as the printed word, in enabling black Americans' self-expression and empowerment. Such periodicals often have been the primary venues for showcasing and supporting the work of black visual artists, including Aaron Douglas, Black Panther illustrator Emory Douglas, and political cartoonist Garfield Haywood. This interdisciplinary panel seeks papers that address the production, history, and aesthetics of black periodical art in a range of forms: mastheads and stock images, cover art, comics, sketches, political cartoons, and other illustrations.
Staging Beckett is a three year research collaboration between the universities of Chester, Reading, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The project started in September 2012, and is exploring the impact of productions of Beckett's plays on British and Irish theatre practice and cultures while also looking at how Beckett has been staged internationally. It is compiling a database of professional productions of Beckett's plays in the UK and Ireland.
The Centro Studi Opera Omnia Luigi Boccherini of Lucca and the Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de musique romantique française are pleased to invite submissions of proposals for the symposium «Music and War in Europe from the Napoleonic Era to the WWI», to be held in Lucca, Complesso Monumentale di San Micheletto, from Friday 28 until Sunday 30 November 2014.
On the occasion of the centennial of the First World War the conference aims to investigate the complex phenomenon of war from the point of view of its influences on the musical landscape, in a time-span ranging from the Napoleonic Wars until the outbreak of the First World War.
The Centro Studi Opera Omnia Luigi Boccherini of Lucca and the Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de musique romantique française, in collaboration with the Italian National Edition of the Complete Works of Pietro Antonio Locatelli, are pleased to invite submissions of proposals for the symposium «P.A. Locatelli and J.-M. Leclair: Legacy in the xixth Century», to be held in Bergamo, Fondazione Mia (Sala Locatelli), from Friday 17 until Sunday 19 October 2014.
The title of this conference takes its inspiration from a concert held in Kassel, 1728, at the court of Philipp von Hessen-Darmstadt, whose protagonists were Pietro Antonio Locatelli and Jean-Marie Leclair l'aîné: the first was said to have played like the devil; the latter like an angel.
