This session at PAMLA (Pacific and Ancient Modern Langauge Association) this year (November 7-10, 2024) welcomes paper proposals in English, Spanish, and Portuguese that consider any aspect of contemporary feminist activisms and cultural and artistic production in the Latin American context. Topics may include but are not limited to digital and hashtag feminist activisms, transnational feminist activisms, Black and Indigenous feminist activisms, Global South feminisms, street activisms, performance activisms, activisms and affect, and protest and artistic production within a broad conceptualization of “translation in action,” the theme of this year’s conference.

These edited collections are part of the upcoming series Equine Creations: Imagining Horses in Literature and Film.

The scope of the present call is broad. All topics regarding the themes and impact of horses in film will be considered.

Contagions and Non-Human Animals: (Re)Viewing Disregarded Species in Real and Imagined Pandemics

The impact of the pandemic and the threat that it poses to future human experiences has been well-documented. However, now that non-human animals are possible carriers and becoming infected, their experiences, while often overlooked, are nevertheless integrated into the worldwide pandemic.

Thus, this collection seeks to balance essays about non-human animals during real-world pandemics, such as the COVID-19 one, with those of their experiences during literary or cinematic ones. The scope of this call for papers is broad and can include topics such as:

--Animals as victims of contagions

Screen Bodies invites submissions to be considered for a forthcoming general issue. We are particularly interested in research on:

• Cyberfeminism

• Health Humanities

• Biomedical Ethics / Bioethics

• Ethics of AI

Abstract: The translation of texts is a familiar, if fraught, act that is the subject of considerable thoughtful examination. But is there an equivalent for visual works? This panel looks at examples of cross-cultural or temporal reworkings of images to challenge certain assumptions about self-evident nature of images and even of vision itself.

The Rosemary VanArsdel Prize

The VanArsdel Prize is awarded annually to the best graduate student essay investigating Victorian periodicals and newspapers. The prize was established in 1990 to honor Rosemary VanArsdel, a founding member of the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals, whose groundbreaking research continues to shape the field of nineteenth-century periodical studies.

The winner of the VanArsdel Prize receives $500 and publication of their submission in Victorian Periodicals Review. 

Applications open May 1 and are due June 15.

Following the success of our conference in 2022, the SFF will be organising a further two-day online event in partnership with Anglia Ruskin University on 7-8 December 2024.

The theme of the conference will be Women in the Black Fantastic and will mark the 40th anniversary of Octavia E. Butler winning both the Hugo Award for Best Short Story and the Nebula Award for Best Novelette.
