Ekphrasis and the Music of Literature

updated:
Thursday, May 2, 2024 - 4:17pm
Diana Shaffer / PAMLA
deadline for submissions:
Friday, May 31, 2024

This panel invites papers that explore how ekphrasis and musical form translate verbal language from one realm of sensory experience into another. Ekphrasis translates words into visual images, whereas musical form translates them into sounds and rhythms. Although ekphrasis and musical form mirror words, they directly affect the emotions at a primordial level not available to verbal articulation. How do music and the visual arts compare to literature? What are the differences between these modes of expression and how they affect their audiences? Proposals on ekphrasis, musical poetry, poetic music, or theories of intermediality from all periods are welcomed.

4th AISNA Graduates Conference: “What is an American?” (1782-2024) Narratives and Counternarratives of an Imagined Nation

updated:
Thursday, May 2, 2024 - 9:36am
AISNA Graduates
deadline for submissions:
Tuesday, May 14, 2024

In a period of tumultuous changes like the ones brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, the rise of far-right governments, racism, and international tensions caused by the war in Ukraine and Gaza, a great reckoning is happening in the Western cultural context, especially with regard to the Atlantic and Transatlantic world. No nation has undergone more rapid and sometimes contradictory transformations than the US, showing tensions between its foundational narratives and counternarratives rising from its too often neglected socio-cultural realities. Culturally embedded American ideals have always emphasized a single unifying narrative capable of synthesizing the plurality of voices on US soil.

The Ruins of Empire: Postcolonial Hauntings

updated:

Postcolonial Narrations Postgraduate Forum
deadline for submissions:
Sunday, May 19, 2024

The notion of ‘haunting’ connotes windswept houses tormented by ghosts and specters, forging a connection between an unresolved past, the troubled present, and imagined futures. With Derrida’s coinage of the French neologism l’hantologie (hauntology), the figure of the specter became a byword for the “disjunction in the presence of being” (Goellner 5), pointing to the conflicting connection between the present and the past. Indeed, “[i]nstead of demanding a distancing, the twists and turns of haunting manifest as a thinking against or after” (Blanco and Peeren 32).

deadline for submissions:

Russell Crowe’s talents were globally recognized in the early 2000s after he appeared in a slate of well-received films – L.A. Confidential, Gladiator, and A Beautiful Mind, among others – that earned him critical acclaim. Nevertheless, in the years following these productions, he has continued to be a part of numerous projects with international and creative appeal. Alongside his films are his associations with Roman soccer teams – established in Spera’s (2023) chapter in my recent volume on Gladiator (https://vernonpress.com/book/1213) – his social media presence, and his musical performances.

Contagions and Non-Human Animals: (Re)Viewing Disregarded Species in Real and Imagined Pandemics

The impact of the pandemic and the threat that it poses to future human experiences has been well-documented. However, now that non-human animals are possible carriers and becoming infected, their experiences, while often overlooked, are nevertheless integrated into the worldwide pandemic.

Thus, this collection seeks to balance essays about non-human animals during real-world pandemics, such as the COVID-19 one, with those of their experiences during literary or cinematic ones. The scope of this call for papers is broad and can include topics such as:
