Panel Title: Reconsidering Civic Humanism in the Visual Arts
Beginning in the 1980s, attention to the discourse of civic humanism sparked new life into eighteenth-century art historical studies and played an important role in the emergence of the so-called 'New Art History', particularly in the field of British art. This panel seeks to evaluate the benefits and limitations of this discourse and to explore methodological alternatives for engaging the visual arts of Europe and the Americas in the long eighteenth century. Papers that address issues of consumerism, fashion, empire, empiricism, antiquarianism, natural history and philosophy, charity, or religion are especially encouraged.
Proposal Deadline: 15 September 2005
