What is Prism? 

Prism: Highlighting Diverse Voices is a student-run and peer-reviewed open-access journal that publishes writing by undergraduates in the Humanities. Prism aims to make academia more inclusive and accessible by centering diverse and underrepresented voices. Contributors of Prism should strive to push the boundaries of what is considered scholastic writing. We value interdisciplinary, critical, and multimodal works that showcase a robust engagement of student writers with a wide variety of audiences. Through rigorous peer review, we aim to engage with global perspectives and foster a dialogic space for college undergraduates in the Humanities, especially underrepresented voices, to share their research work in varied formats. As an international undergraduate journal, we invite students from all countries to submit. 

What Writing Can I Submit?

  • Paper or Project from College Course
  • Media Review 

  • Original Literature 

  • Original Artwork

  • Formal (Research) Paper based in the Humanities

  • Multimodal Project (i.e., blog, website, video, photo essay)

What Questions Should I Consider in my Writing?

We welcome submissions that explore questions significant to the humanities, such as:

  1. Identity:

  • How do you define your own identity? What aspects of your identity are most significant to you?

  • How has your identity shaped your experiences and perspectives?

  • How do you navigate multiple identities (e.g., cultural, gender, racial) in your daily life?

  • How does my perspective influence how I interact with the world?

  • Community:

    • What communities do you belong to? How do these communities influence your sense of belonging?

    • How do you contribute to or engage with your community?

    • How does community support impact individual well-being?

    • How do my communities and I define identity, power, and privilege? 

  • Media:

    • How does media representation affect marginalized communities? What stereotypes persist in media portrayals?

    • How can media be a tool for empowerment and social change?

    • How do alternative media platforms challenge mainstream narratives?

    • What is included or missing in the media I am interacting with?

  • Language:

    • How does language and knowledge shape our understanding of culture and identity?

    • What role does language play in preserving cultural heritage?

    • How do language barriers impact communication and access to resources?

    • What do I consider meaningful knowledge? 

  • Culture:

    • How do cultural practices and traditions shape individual and collective identities?

    • What cultural artifacts or practices hold personal significance for you?

    • How can cultural exchange foster understanding and bridge gaps between communities?

    • How has my perspective changed overtime? What influenced the change?

    Please Submit the Following to katienoh.prism@gmail.com by 30 June, 2024: 

    • Up to 500 words abstract of essay, article, or project; include a title; remove name(s)

    • Up to 100 words short bio with contact information

    • Our editorial staff read, write, and speak English; however, we encourage students to play with language choices in their submissions. 

    • If Accepted, 

      • submissions should not exceed 8000 words

      • Any included images need to be at least 300 DPI

      • Any included URLs need to be double-checked

      • Submissions must conform to current MLA guidelines (9th edition)
