CFP: [African-American] African American Children's literature MLA special session

The study of African American children's literature resides at the
intersection of many disciplines-- African American literature and
children's literature of course, but also cultural studies, studies of
gender and sexuality, American history, popular culture, and more. This
rich and fruitful interdisciplinarity makes for an innovative and exciting
field that, because it has not been claimed by any one field, is often left
out of critical conversations altogether.
   I'm seeking others interested in participating in a special session on
African American children's literature at the 2008 MLA. Please contact me
with your expressions of interest and/or proposals by March 25 at
mpriest_at_scu.edu.

CFP: MSA X Panel: The Frankfurt School and Anglo-American Modernism

Over the past decade, the Frankfurt School has enjoyed resurgent interest
in the fields of literary and political criticism, and this resurgence
coincides with renewed interest in aesthetic discourses across the
humanities generally. This panel will focus on the need for turning to
the Frankfurt School particularly in order to re-read Anglo-American
modernist literature. Questions to consider are:

Facts On File, a New York publisher of reference books for schools and
libraries, is seeking a scholar to write a one-volume reference book on
Langston Hughes, focusing on critical analysis of his works. The ideal
author will have a Ph.D., broad knowledge of Hughes's life and works, and
an ability to write clearly and succinctly for students in both high
school and college. This large project (250,000-300,000 words) must be
completed within two years. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines will be

Indo-Caribbean Literature and Culture
A Conference to Celebrate the 170thAnniversary of the Arrival of
East Indians in the Caribbean
University of Warwick
26th-27th June 2008
 
 
Between 1838 and 1917 several thousand East Indians crossed the ‘black waters’ (kala-pani) and
were indentured in the Caribbean to replace slave labour. Their hard work saved an ailing sugar
industry, rescuing many British colonies from economic disaster. In recent times, there has been
a conscious drive within Indo-Caribbean scholarship to re-explore the system of indentureship
with a view to gaining a deeper understanding of the Indian experience of migration and work.
