We are seeking essays for an edited collection on "Asian American
Literature and Postcolonial Theory," which should be both an exploration
and a mapping of the debates around these two terms and their corollaries.
Such corollary debates have erupted over the use of terms such as diaspora,
cultural memory, racial melancholy and trauma, nationalism, ethnicity, and
hybridity in Asian American cultural critique. Essays that consider these
genealogies and/or question the usefulness of theories derived from
colonial and postcolonial discourse are especially welcome. Also of
interest would be specific author, period, regional, national, and textual

The imagination, according to Aristotle, provides the same kind of sensory
information to our consciousness during dreaming as our actual senses
provide to our consciousness during wakeful periods (459a1 15-22). If it is
the case that our knowledge-making derives from sense-perception, then it
must also be the case that the texts we imagine during the dream state are
also capable of producing knowledge. But what is this knowledge? And what
kind of text is this?

A CALL FOR PAPERS (Deadline –September 1, 2005; journal issue)

Much of contemporary academic debate is focused on the difficulty in
representing trauma, as well as the undeniable need to find a way to
communicate such experience. Scholars such as Cathy Caruth have noted that
the traumatized individual is unable to witness him or herself at the moment
of violent breach. Therefore, traumatic experience cannot be easily
understood, and yet, paradoxically, it must be articulated. Present day
concerns seem to focus in on the problematic representation of horrific
experiences such as slavery, the Holocaust, and the attack of September 11,
2001.

"GUILT"
CALL FOR PAPERS for a special issue of English Studies in Canada on the
topic of GUILT, to appear in 2006. Melanie Klein argued that guilt is
constituted at the meeting point between powerful, often conflicting
impulses: love and reparation on one hand, hate, greed, and aggression on
the other. Guilt, that is, is the product of and in turn produces both
conciliation and violence, well-being and shame. What does it mean to be
guilty or to feel guilt, as individuals and as collectives (societies,
gangs, communities, corporations, nations, etc.)? How is guilt experienced
psychologically? historically? politically? culturally? sexually?

Autobiography and the Body

We are seeking papers that will focus on the role of the body in autobiography for a panel that will be held at the Northeast MLA Conference March 2-5, 2006 in Philadelphia, PA. This panel will focus on the recent trend among feminist scholars to examine the prevalence of the body in the autobiographies of women and its noticeable absence in autobiographies of men. Often in women’s autobiography, the physical self contributes largely to the author’s own identity. For example, Lucy Grealy’s Autobiography of a Face equates her physical appearance with her definition of self, while more tradition autobiographies of men, such as Benjamin Franklin and Henry Adams, emphasize a life of intellectual accomplishments.

Phantom Processions and Runaway Trains: How Narrative Structures are Linked

The metaphor of a ³train of thought² is an old and accepted one. with sanity
as the ability to maintain the train of rational causation, and madness, the
breakdown of that train.
David Hume compares the mind to a theatre, and suggests that thoughts are a
series of phantom performers who pass in procession on the stage of the
mind. Like Hume, Freud sees the psyche as a space; in the ²topographical

The contemporary world system of global capitalist expansion that is producing new imperialisms around the globe will remain imperialist throughout the visible future, unless we learn how to "cross borders" from a dominating and imperialising past and present to a more "democratic" and just future society.
